Merry Xmas from Saltdean Lido

At a public meeting in March 2010, Saltdean Lido's former private leaseholder announced that 'the public's interest in lidos was over, Saltdean lido was unsustainable ... people no longer wished to swim outdoors'. He announced plans to fill in the pool with concrete and build 120 apartments on the site.

In response, local residents formed a group and promised to come up with a plan to make Saltdean Lido a sustainable facility once again. It's been a long journey, and a bumpy one at that, but we're half way there!

This year, whilst the new pool has been under construction, thousands of hours have been spent: honing a credible business plan, testing the buildings failing structure, developing remedial and building plans, liaising with BHCC, Historic England and experts from around the globe, and submitting grant applications. All of which have been necessary to start phase 2 of the project - the restoration of Saltdean Lido's iconic grade II* listed building.

Not everyone is aware that every public swim in the UK is subsidised, mostly by local authorities. However, BHCC have been unable to subsidise Saltdean Lido since 1994, which is why it's important that all of this work is done by a not for profit caretaker group.

It's been a busy year for us, but a rewarding one at that. So we'd like to take this moment to thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support - it means a lot to us.

From all of us, to all of you, we wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy 2017!
